The village of Telouet lies in the magnificent Ounila Valley, on the southern slopes of the High Atlas Mountains, often crowned with snow in winter. This remote and striking valley attracted the attention of the French painter Jacques Majorelle in the early 20th century, who stayed there several times and drew inspiration for some of his most remarkable works.

Telouet is the ancestral stronghold of the Glaoua family, powerful local rulers who once dominated much of southern Morocco and were known as the “Lords of the Atlas”.

An architectural masterpiece between Amazigh tradition and Moorish refinement

The village is home to their former residence, the Kasbah of Telouet, an imposing structure built in the 19th century. Both palace and fortress, it symbolised power and prestige and served as a strategic command post controlling the ancient caravan routes linking the Sahara to Marrakech.

At its height, the Telouet kasbah was a vast architectural complex combining a fortress, a palace and a caravanserai. It blends traditional Amazigh earthen architecture with refined Hispano-Moorish and oriental influences, reflecting the splendour the Glaoua sought to project. Lavishly decorated walls, carved ceilings and intricate motifs still bear witness to the luxury in which the family lived, before the kasbah was abandoned in 1956.

From power and splendour to abandonment and survival

Today, the kasbah has been weakened by time, harsh climatic conditions and decades of neglect. Only the main residence and a few annexes remain relatively well preserved, offering visitors a glimpse into the skill of the craftsmen, the refinement of the former rulers and the daily life of those who once inhabited this remarkable place.

Following the powerful earthquake that struck Morocco in September 2023, the Telouet kasbah suffered significant damage and was temporarily closed to the public. After essential restoration work, this emblematic site is now open once again, allowing visitors to rediscover one of the most striking landmarks of southern Morocco’s architectural and historical heritage.

The Todgha Gorges (Todra) are located at an altitude of 1300 meters at the foot of the High Atlas Mountains and extend over more than 30 km. In winter, the nearby snow-capped peaks offer a fantastic view, unlike spring when the cool climate and greenery reveal the splendor of the area. This arid and rocky land is dotted with lush oases. The palm grove blooms, and a winding river flows through the valley. Fruit trees thrive there: almond trees, pomegranates, peach trees, olive trees, fig trees, poplars, plum trees, and others. Tamarisks and oleanders spread a typical fragrance in the surroundings.

The Asdaf Mountain separates the oases of Todgha and Tinejdad.

Historically, Todgha has been a prosperous region since the time of the trade caravans that crisscrossed the Sahara towards northern Morocco. Its strategic position made it an important point on the caravan route.

The abundance of water and pasture led to the sedentarization of nomadic tribes in the valley. Todgha was also a melting pot area. It was inhabited by several ethnic groups: Berbers, Jews, Haratines (Blacks), and Arabs.

The main Berber tribes of the valley are said to be the Aït Todra, the Aït Aatta, the Aït Merghad, the Aït Senan, and the Aït Izdegh. The architectural style is authentically Berber: fortified villages built in pisé, including kasbahs and ksours. Today, the Todgha Valley is an attractive tourist destination. Its gorges have exceptional splendor. Cliffs about 300 meters high form steep gorges. Climbing enthusiasts flock there from all over. The Todgha River splits these mountain masses and continues its course winding through the valley. Gardens and fields line its banks. So many natural assets allow for various activities: walking tours in the Todgha Gorges, mountain hiking, mountain biking excursions, climbing in the gorges, excursions in the palm grove, horseback riding… Tourist services continue to be established in the region, including guesthouses and restaurants.

The inhabitants of the valley mainly live from agriculture and livestock farming. Tourism is increasingly becoming a source of income for the population. The emigration of some men from the region to Europe in the seventies has benefited the improvement of the standard of living of the inhabitants.

Tamgroute, a small town nestled in the Draa Valley of Morocco, boasts a rich historical and cultural heritage dating back centuries. Renowned for its ancient pottery traditions, Tamgroute has been a center of craftsmanship and learning since medieval times.

Tamegroute is an Amazigh term meaning the last place visited. Its name refers to its geographical position as the last inhabited place on the edge of the desert, and was therefore an important resting place.

One of the town’s most iconic landmarks is the Zaouia Naciriya, a historic religious complex founded in the 17th century by the Naciri family. One of the main members of the Naciri family, Sidi Mohamed Ben Nacer, enjoyed a great reputation. This pious man filled the library of Tamgroute with more than 4000 precious works that he brought back from his long journeys in Africa and the Orient. After his death, his son Sidi Ahmed Ben Nasser succeeded him. He continued to strengthen the spiritual and cultural influence of the zaouïa.

During this period, Morocco was ruled by the Saadian dynasty, and the Naciri family played a prominent role as scholars and spiritual leaders. The Zaouia Naciriya served as a spiritual center and educational institution, attracting scholars and students from across the region. Its library, established by the Naciri family, contains rare manuscripts dating back to the Middle Ages, making it a significant pilgrimage site for scholars and historians.

Tamgroute’s pottery industry, known for its distinctive green glaze, continues to thrive today, with artisans carrying on age-old techniques passed down through generations. Visitors can explore traditional workshops and witness the intricate process of pottery making firsthand.

In addition to its cultural heritage, Tamgroute offers visitors the chance to explore its natural beauty, with picturesque palm groves and the flowing waters of the Draa River providing a tranquil setting for relaxation and exploration.

The town’s historic kasbah, with its imposing walls and labyrinthine streets, offers a glimpse into Tamgroute’s past as a strategic outpost along ancient trade routes.

For those interested in delving deeper into Tamgroute’s history and culture, guided tours are available, providing insights into the town’s rich tapestry of traditions and customs.

The oasis of Fint is a green place surrounded by rocks. Majestic date palms and orchards grow on the banks of the river that runs through it.

The origin of its name in Amazigh is “n’fint” which literally means “hidden”.

Fint is populated by an entirely Amazigh community known for its hospitality. Its first inhabitants lived in cave dwellings. The old village built on the side of a rock overlooking the river is now in ruins. The current houses are located along the winding river, which irrigates the plots of land cultivated by a modest peasant population.

The beauty of its nature and the friendliness of its inhabitants make the Fint oasis a haven of peace. Walks along the river, conviviality with the friendly villagers, resting under the palm trees, a panoramic view of the oasis… are moments of happiness to be experienced in peace in the Fint oasis.

There is a hotel restaurant and guest houses on site.

Today it is a popular tourist site.
